Maidenhead Converter – Handy iOS app for mobile operators

On September 30th, Donald Hays released v2.0 of his excellent iOS app, Maidenhead Converter. Having been previously pulled from the App Store by the author, this app is making a much-welcomed return. Maidenhead Converter is very useful for mobile operators such as contest rovers or those chasing grid squares (or being chased for grid squares).

Maidenhead Converter 2.0 incorporates several changes from the original version, some of which were not possible when it was first released in 2009. Among the changes for v2.0 are:

  • Integrated map within the app
  • Support for multiple coordinate formats
  • Support for 2, 4, 6, or 8 character grid square locators

The basic functionality of Maidenhead Converter is centered around showing your current Maidenhead grid square and Latitude/Longitude using your device’s built-in location system. This is displayed upon a map on the main screen which can be zoomed in or out as far as you need. Additionally, you can manually enter a Latitude/Longitude or Maidenhead grid square and the map will move to display that location.

A brief blog post about the development of Maidenhead Converter v2.0 and Donald’s App Store history can be found on his website.

Maidenhead Converter is available in the iOS App Store. More information about the app can be found at MaidenheadApp.com. The app requires iOS 8, but is a free download.  Maidenhead Converter is supported with in-app iAd advertising but for $1.99, you can disable the ads for a clean user experience.
